Editor's notes

Developed from Gary Hume’s Life Jacket (2018), this tray for Giobagnara Art Edition sets olive suede forms within a field of aluminium. The leather is inlaid completely flush, allowing soft texture and reflective metal to meet along precise contours. The open areas of aluminium are integral to the composition, changing gently with the light.

Its shallow profile keeps attention on the image while retaining the useful form of a tray. Displayed upright on its coordinating aluminium stand, sold separately, it offers another way to appreciate the arrangement at eye level. Made in Italy in a numbered and signed edition of 12.

Curated by Nick Vinson, Giobagnara Art Edition brings the visual languages of Gary Hume and Martino Gamper into the tactile medium of leather marquetry. Selected paintings by Hume are reinterpreted through leather inlaid flush into aluminium, while Gamper explores the expressive possibilities of geometry across sculptural vessels, furniture and wall compositions.

The precision of the making allows each artist’s approach to colour and form to remain distinctly recognisable.
